The following article will outline the process of setting up avail completion settings to allow users to mark themselves completed for training that was taken outside of a curriculum.
Need to Know
- Avail completion will need to be set up by the administrator when creating the curriculum
- The process involves honoring previous completions during the registration process
- Based on the properties of the curriculum, the system will calculate if completion of a course outside the curriculum structure will be eligible for completion.
Honoring Previous Completions should ONLY be done if you are using this setting, it is still best practice to never honor previous completions for shared courses as it could have implications at other CSU campuses.
If you are looking to set up avail completions, please reach out to systemwide LMS support team for assistance.

Setting up Avail Completion for a Curriculum Structure
The following set-up instructions will outline the process when there is one course within the curriculum structure with Avail Completion setup.
- Login to CSU Learn
- Navigate to Administration > Quick Links > Learning Activities
- Hover over New Activity > and select Curriculum
- Update the general properties of the activity. For more information on basic curriculum setup, please visit the How to Create a Curriculum article.
- Once you have updated the properties, go to Actions > Subscribe (left hand side of the screen)

- Search for the course you will add to the curriculum, check the box next to the activity and once completed, click Subscription Properties
- On the Subscription Properties screen, you will need to select the following options (either at the “Apply to All” section or at the course level).
- Select the first option “Honor successful completions made after this activity structure moves to production”
- Select the last option “Only honor the above completions after the learner registers for at least one activity in this activity structure”
- Click Add Subscription to add the course to your curriculum
- Once completed, click “Validate for Production” on the bottom left to apply the changes to your curriculum.
If you have questions about these options, it is best to open up a ticket with the systemwide LMS support team to assist you with this set-up.
Applying Completion as a User
The instructions below will assist users with acknowledging and act when the avail completion feature is enabled. There are two scenarios that may come up when applying completions.
- When a curriculum has a completion to apply and there is only one course
- When a curriculum has a completion to apply and there are multiple courses
Applying Completion to a Curriculum with One Course
When the learner goes to register for the curriculum there will be a blue banner at the top of the screen with the language:
“You’ve already attended one or more of the activities in this structure. You might not need to retake them. To apply previous completions to this structure for supported activities, click here.”
- When prompted with this message, click the words “click here.” This will bring you to the Avail completion screen
- It will ask the user to mark the course completed
- Select Yes.

- The curriculum will update the curriculum to the status “Attended” and (if applicable) recalculate and recurring training assignments based on this date.
For recurring training, if the completion is applied the curriculum will use that completion as the last completion date. If the user needs to complete the training again, the status will update to “Expired” if the user’s completion falls outside the recurring training window.
Applying Completion for Curriculum with Multiple Courses
If a user has completed one course in a curriculum, but the curriculum has multiple courses as part of the structure, the user can still apply the completion for the course completed but will require the user to complete the remaining courses. There is a step AFTER applying the completion to register for the curriculum and remaining activities (as not to erase the completion that was just applied).
- When prompted at the curriculum level with completions to apply, click on the words “click here”
- It will ask the user to mark the course completed
- Select Yes.

You will notice that you have a curriculum with one course as attended, but one course that needs to be registered for (along with the curriculum).
- Click More Actions (the three horizontal dots at the top right) and Register at the curriculum level
- You will see a Registration Issues screen with a status of “already attended” for the course you just applied the completion for.
- Select Skip Registration for already attended activities
If you do not click “Skip registration for completed activities,” it will override your completion and register you for all activities in the curriculum structure. This means the user would be required to complete all the activities in the structure again.
- Click Submit to complete the registration process.
You will see a congratulations message banner at the top and notice that the user will only have one course to complete (as the completion was applied to the other course) and the curriculum is now fully registered.
This concludes how to set up Avail Completion as an administrator and apply completions as a user
